Stability & Compatibility Testing Checklist

Use this checklist to plan stability and packaging compatibility testing and to send the right information to manufacturers for accurate quotes.

Stability and compatibility testing are standard in cosmetic development and contract manufacturing: they support shelf-life claims, packaging selection, and regulatory expectations (e.g. EU cosmetic safety). This checklist reflects common test types (accelerated/real-time stability, compatibility, microbial where applicable) and what to agree with manufacturers before quoting. Use with the lead-time planner since testing often drives the critical path.

Checklist (Buyer-Side)

1) Define scope: product type, claims, target markets, expected storage (hot/cold), and packaging format(s).

2) Packaging details: material, component supplier, decoration/label type, closure specs, and fill temperature constraints.

3) Testing plan (examples): accelerated stability, real-time stability, freeze/thaw cycles, microbial challenge testing (when applicable), viscosity/pH/odor/color, leakage/torque, pump performance.

4) Time points: agree measurement points (e.g., 0/2/4/8/12 weeks accelerated; plus real-time if needed).

5) Pass/fail criteria: define what “acceptable change” means for appearance, odor, viscosity, separation, and packaging function.

6) Output: ask for a summary you can attach to your product file and share with partners.

What to send manufacturers

Packaging drawings/specs (or samples), target fill volume, viscosity expectations, any restricted ingredients, and your target timeline.

If you are choosing between packaging options, request quotes for both and ask which has lower component MOQs and shorter lead times.

How does this affect timeline?

Stability windows can be a critical path. Use the Lead Time Planner and ask manufacturers how testing overlaps with production planning.

Do manufacturers include testing?

Some do, some partner with labs, and some require you to manage it. Confirm in writing what is included and how results are reported.

What drives stability testing requirements?

Product type, claims (e.g. shelf life), formula changes, packaging, and target markets. EU cosmetic regulation expects evidence to support product safety and stability; many retailers also require it.

Sources & scope

  • EU Regulation (EC) 1223/2009 — cosmetic product safety; stability and compatibility support safety and shelf-life claims.
  • Test types (accelerated, real-time, compatibility) align with industry and lab practice. Not a substitute for a formal test protocol or regulatory advice.

Checklist is for planning only. Define test plan and pass/fail criteria with your manufacturer or lab. Cruxi does not provide regulatory advice.
